Leap of Kindness Day 2028

2028 is a Leap Year, and this means we all get one extra day on Thursday, February 29, 2028. What will you do with your extra day? Our idea – – use your extra day to do something kind for someone else and encourage everyone in your family, workplace, and community to do the same.

Leap of Kindness Day was invented by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce in 2016, and dozens of area employers and hundreds of their employees donated time, talent, and treasure to support local nonprofits, seniors, first responders, health care workers, Veterans, animal shelters, etc. In 2020, more than 200 communities in the US, Canada, and Ireland participated in Leap of Kindness Day, and more than 250 communities from Singapore, to New Zealand, to the UK, Canada and across the United States joined this movement in 2024.

Here are some of our favorite Leap of Kindness Day activities:

  • Deliver breakfast or lunch to local first responders
  • Take flowers or non-skid socks to a local nursing home
  • Collect clothes, food, or personal care items for a local shelter
  • Send a thank you card to someone who means a lot to you
  • Clean up a local park, playground, or trail
  • If you own a shop or restaurant, donate a percentage of sales on Leap of Kindness Day to your favorite charity

Cereal Box Domino Chain of Kindness

2/29/2024 is a day that will never be forgotten by me, our community or our Chamber Board!    When we heard about Leap of Kindness Day we knew we wanted to participate and got to planning.  We started the day with Chamber Board and community members at our local schools greeting the kids with high fives and motivational stickers (I think we enjoyed it more than they did).   We started a “pay it forward chain” at our local coffee shop with $29 and others chipped in and many in the community enjoyed a free morning beverage and tips that day at the coffee shop were donated to our local 4H!   Coffee was prepaid for the morning coffee drinkers at their two local hangouts by a kind individual.   One of our local banks gave surprises to their 29th customers, another allowed each of their tellers to leave work to volunteer for 29 minutes at our local charity thrift store.   We set up a table on our town square’s courthouse lawn with slips of paper that each had kindness quotes on them and on the blank side a space to write a hope/wish dream and then hang it on our “wish tree” (which was really a bush), it was so neet to see the colored paper flowing in the wind that day filled with wishes!

A couple of weeks before the 24th we took orders for a custom be kind shirt, we sold over 300 shirts and donated the proceeds to our local elementary school to go towards overdue lunch accounts.
Prior to the 24th we asked the community to bring in boxes of cereal, we collected over 400 boxes and they were arranged by our Board members for the highlight of our day, the cereal box domino chain of kindness.  We did this at our local, private Catholic school and before tip off the school principal gave a wonderful talk on kindness that I know I will never forget and I hope the students won’t either.   After the cereal chain the students filed out the door except for the 8th graders who jumped in and helped stack up the boxes and load them into waiting trucks to be delivered to a local food pantry!

Our local church alliance collected snacks and hygiene items and delivered them to and prayed with the residents of our low income apartments.   Another church group invited anyone to come for the afternoon and make blankets with them to donate to our cancer support group, they provided all the supplies and people just showed up to make blankets.

These are just some highlights from that day, I know there were many other acts of kindness performed that day and our hope is that this day inspired others in our community to spread kindness all the time!
